Mat Omukeeka - Multicoloured

This is a Ganda woven, hand - made mat. It is made from palm leaves sourced from swamps in the rural areas of Masaka and Kyotera districts. The making of this kind of mat involves collecting palm leaves, drying them in preferred colors and finally weaving them into different kinds of mats.

The mat is used as a tool for sitting on, for interior decoration, and for beddings among other functions. The mat can also be given as a gift to a loved one as a symbol of respect and affection. Mats are ideal for use in aisles of homes, churches, mosques, and other places. In Africa, the traditional straw mats served as the red carpet to honor the guests of dignity.
