Growth habit
Watermelon likes a warm, dry climate, not cold-tolerant, the optimal temperature for growth and development is 24-30 degrees, the optimal temperature for root growth and development is 30-32 degrees, and the minimum temperature for root hair formation is 14 degrees. Watermelon needs a large temperature difference between day and night during its growth and development. Watermelon is drought-tolerant, intolerant to humidity, rainy days, excessive humidity, susceptible to disease. Watermelon loves sunlight and has a long growth period, so it needs a lot of nutrients. With the growth of the plant, the amount of fertilizer required for watermelon gradually increases, and reaches the maximum when the fruit grows vigorously. Watermelon has strong adaptability, with loose soil, deep soil and sandy soil with good drainage. Like weak acidity, PH5-7.
Reproduction method
1. Seed soaking and accelerating germination: drying the seeds for 2 days before sowing, and then sterilizing the seeds. Soak the seeds in warm water at 55°C, stir while soaking for about 30 minutes, and continue to soak the seeds for 2 hours after cooling. Medicament treatment usually uses formalin 100 times solution to soak the seeds for 30 minutes, or 50% carbendazim 500 times solution to soak the seeds for 1 hour, rinse with clean water and soak for 3-4 hours. Wash the treated seeds and place them in a constant temperature box at 40°C for 6 hours to germinate, and then germinate at a constant temperature of 33°C. When the radicle grows to 0.5 cm, the seeds can be sown.
2. Prepare the seedbed: a plot with a leeward wind and sunny, high dry terrain, and convenient management should be selected to build a seedbed. Watermelon seedlings in early spring should be raised in large sheds or greenhouses. Electric heating wires can be laid to increase soil temperature, and small arch sheds can be placed on the seedling bed. After the extension of autumn, the watermelon seedlings should be raised and sheltered from rainstorm. The nutrient soil is required to be loose, free of diseases and insect pests, and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be applied in proportion, with a little stickiness. 6 parts of rice field topsoil, 3 parts of decomposed manure and 1 part of plant ash can be mixed evenly, and 5 kg of decomposed chicken and duck manure per cubic meter of soil can be added. The soil and fertilizer should be crushed and sieved to keep the granular shape, then add proper amount of water to fully mix and compost 1-2 months before planting. Use nutrient bowls to grow seedlings. The diameter of the bowl is 6-8 cm. It is made of waste newspapers. Each big newspaper is made of 10 paper bowls. Plastic bowls and mortar bowls can also be used. Put the nutrient soil into the nutrient bowl, 1-2 cm from the mouth of the bowl, and arrange them neatly in the seedbed.
